Fisheries Council WebsiteThe Council has been busy in the first quarter of the year with its focus on fishery management plans and other key projects progressing well. A summary of the progress of these projects is provided below, with more information available on the Council website. The next meeting of the Fisheries Council will be held on Thursday 17 May 2012 with the main focus being on the draft Recreational Fishing Strategic Plan and finalising the draft Commercial Abalone Fishery Management Plan for submission to the Minister for Fisheries. Catherine Cooper FISHERIES MANAGEMENT PLANSCommercial Marine Scalefish FisheryA draft commercial Marine Scalefish Fishery Management Plan was endorsed by Council at its March meeting. Following approval by the Minister the plan will be released for a three month public consultation period. As part of this process several public meetings will be held across the State to enable the community to gain a better understanding of the plan and provide input. Lake Eyre Basin Fishery Management PlanThe draft Lake Eyre Basin Fishery Management Plan has been submitted to the Minister for consideration. Once the plan has been approved by the Minister, it will be released for a three month public consultation period. Commercial Abalone Fishery Management PlanThe Commercial Abalone Fishery Management Plan has been released for two months of public consultation. Written submissions in response to the plan must be provided by 25 April 2012. RULES REVIEWThe Council is continuing its work on a comprehensive review of fisheries regulations with the aim to simplify the current system. Final recommendations on the Prawn and Abalone fisheries have been provided to industry for comment. Recommendations for other fisheries are being progressed and will be forwarded to industry for comment over the coming months. The project is due for completion on 30 June 2012. CO-MANAGEMENT POLICYOne of the Fisheries Council’s key functions is to promote the co-management of fisheries in South Australia. Over the last year, the Council, together with PIRSA Fisheries and Aquaculture has been developing a draft Co-Management Policy. This draft policy was endorsed by the Fisheries Council at its March meeting and has been submitted to the Minister for consideration. Once approved, the draft policy will be released for industry comment.
